The Functional Medicine Approach to Cognitive Decline

Cognitive Decline

Using our root cause analysis approach to problems with memory and cognitive issues, we can help identify the reasons why the brain isn’t managing its job properly, and work to systematically fix them.

While hundreds of failed drug trials tell us that there is no simple fix to the complexities of the central nervous system, the work of Dr Dale Bredesen has shown there is another way. Scientific data now shows categorically that using a multi-modal approach and identifying and correcting all of the underlying problems CAN succeed in halting and even reversing cognitive decline – even in Alzheimer’s disease.

At Functional Nexus, we have been privileged to see these principals in action in our patients and are growing our specialist clinic for mental health and cognitive decline under our new clinical lead Dr Rosie Walwyn.

Dr Rosie initially trained as an NHS medical doctor and psychiatrist, and has worked for many years supporting elderly patients with dementia in NHS settings. However, with her Functional Medicine training, she now works with patients to build treatment plans to effectively treat the precursors and symptoms of dementia.

This same toolbox also helps her support a diverse range of patients suffering from neurological issues, brain-fog and chronic fatigue and post-viral syndromes such as Long Covid.

What is the Bredesen Protocol?

Dr Rosie trained with the Bredesen Team in the US and is a certified ReCODE practitioner, alongside her training in Functional Medicine (with IFM and mentorship with Dr Sarah in Functional Nexus).

In her clinic we offer access to:

  • The RECODE protocol – the treatment planning and monitoring tool for reversal of Cognitive decline, which we use alongside our Functional Medicine approach.
  • PRECODE protocol – aimed at optimising brain health and prevention of cognitive decline in those with high risk of cognitive decline due to risk factors such as diabetes or inflammation and those with strong family histories of dementia.

We highly recommend Dr Bredesen’s hopeful and uplifting book The End of Alzheimer’s’. Since 2014, Dr Bredesen’s research and his practical approach has permeated the Functional medicine world – leading to reversal of cognitive decline in thousands of patients – where previously there was thought to be no effective treatment. Dr Bredesen is continuing his invaluable work in this area from his US-based clinic and you can read more about his ground-breaking work here https://www.apollohealthco.com/bredesen-protocol/

Remember, you don’t have to be an older adult or have dementia to see the clinic for support with cognitive issues.

Whatever the cause of your problems, we prefer to start investigation and treatment as soon as possible, to get the best results from our treatment plans.

So, whether you have symptoms already, or think you might be at risk due to existing conditions, we are here to help investigate which Functional Medicine approaches are right for you.
